What’s Actually in Your Tap Water
The United States has among the most regulated drinking water systems in the world, and municipal water in most jurisdictions meets federal safety standards. ‘Meeting standards’ doesn’t mean ‘perfectly clean’ or ‘free of everything you’d prefer not to drink’ — it means contaminants are below federally established maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) that are set based on health impact calculations that consider both risk and treatment feasibility.
Understanding what your specific water contains — not what water theoretically contains, but what the water at your address actually shows — requires water quality information that’s more accessible than most people realize.
The Annual Water Quality Report: Start Here
Municipal water suppliers are required by federal law to send customers an annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR, also called a Water Quality Report) that lists detected contaminants, their measured concentrations, the MCL for each, and whether any violations occurred during the reporting period. This report is typically mailed annually and available on the utility’s website.
Reading the CCR gives you the baseline: which contaminants are present, at what levels relative to standards, and whether the water meets all regulatory requirements. For the majority of municipal water customers, the CCR will show that water meets all standards. For some customers, particularly in areas with older water infrastructure, the CCR may show contaminants at levels that the household might want to address at the point of use.
What Home Testing Adds to the CCR
The CCR reflects water at the treatment plant, not necessarily at the tap. Lead is the most significant example: if your home has lead service lines, lead solder, or lead-containing fixtures (common in homes built before 1986), lead can leach into water between the treatment plant and your glass. The CCR may show zero lead at the plant while your tap water has detectable lead levels.
A first-draw home water test — collecting water from the tap after it’s sat overnight without use (the ‘first draw’ most likely to show lead from leaching) and sending to a certified lab — provides the at-the-tap lead reading that the CCR doesn’t capture. This test costs $20–$50 and is the most important home water quality test for households in older homes.
Filtration Options Matched to Actual Concerns
Water filtration is appropriate when testing identifies specific contaminants of concern. The filtration technology should be selected for the specific contaminant, not purchased generically. Activated carbon filters (pitcher filters like Brita, faucet filters, under-sink filters) remove chlorine taste and odor, many volatile organic compounds, and some other contaminants. They do not remove dissolved minerals, nitrates, many heavy metals, or fluoride.
Reverse osmosis (RO) systems remove a much wider range of contaminants including lead, nitrates, arsenic, fluoride, and many others, along with the contaminants that carbon filters address. They waste 2–4 gallons per gallon of purified water and are typically installed as under-sink point-of-use systems for drinking and cooking water. They’re the most appropriate choice when multiple contaminants are present or when heavy metals are a concern.
Well Water: A Different Starting Point
Homes using private wells are not covered by the Safe Drinking Water Act, which only applies to public water systems. Well water quality is the homeowner’s responsibility entirely — there’s no utility sending a CCR, no treatment plant addressing common contaminants, and no regulatory oversight of what’s in the water.
Well water should be tested at minimum annually for coliform bacteria (indicating contamination from surface water or animal waste), nitrates (from agricultural runoff or septic system leaching), and pH. Testing for local area-specific contaminants (arsenic, radon, pesticides, industrial compounds) is appropriate based on the region’s geology and land use. Your state’s environmental agency or cooperative extension service can recommend the testing panel appropriate for your area.
