The practical value extends beyond energy savings: geo-fencing (the thermostat detects when you’re approaching home and begins conditioning the space) means arriving home to a comfortable temperature without running the HVAC when no one is home. A device that’s genuinely improving daily life and reducing utility bills every day of the year, at a one-time cost of $150–$250 and a DIY installation, is the smart home product archetype that others should be compared to.
Smart Lighting: Valuable With Appropriate Expectations
Smart lighting (Philips Hue, LIFX, smart switches from Lutron, Leviton) provides genuine convenience and energy savings when implemented thoughtfully. Automated scheduling (lights that turn on at dusk and off at midnight, without any manual action), motion-triggered lighting in rarely visited areas (garage, basement, hallways), and the ability to turn off lights remotely (eliminating the ‘did I leave the kitchen light on?’ concern) address real daily inconveniences.
The complexity caveat: smart lighting requires either smart bulbs or smart switches, and the integration with voice assistants, apps, and automation platforms varies in reliability. The security trade-off: any internet-connected lock is theoretically susceptible to different attack vectors than a physical key. Physical security through high-quality mechanical locks remains the baseline; smart locks add convenience, not additional security.
Technologies to Think Carefully About
Smart refrigerators, smart ovens, and similar appliance-integration products add connectivity to items with 10–20-year lifespans. The risk: the app or cloud service the product depends on may be discontinued or changed significantly before the appliance reaches end of life, leaving a smart feature set that no longer works on a functional appliance.
